Sophia Balagamwala

Sophia Balagamwala (b. Karachi, Pakistan 1987) is an artist, illustrator and curator based in Karachi. She has a BA from the University of Toronto and an MFA from Cornell University. She has worked in a curatorial capacity at the Citizens Archive of Pakistan since 2011, and is currently the Lead Curator for National History Museum at the Greater Iqbal Park, Lahore

 Balagamwala uses juvenile, nonsense images to highlight the most serious issues of our times, using portraiture as a means of cutting people in high offices down to size. The titles of her works are are titillatingly hilarious and represent a culture in which people defer to higher rank on the face of it but are quick to use wit and jocularity behind the backs of politicians and those in power
