Ayaz Johkio (b. Mehrabpur, Pakistan1978) currently lives and works in Lahore. Jokhio received his BFA from National College of Arts Lahore in 2001. He was chosen best contemporary poet by the Sindhi Literary Society in 1999. In 2004, he directed a short film that was later selected for the 4th Kara Film Festival in Karachi. Jokhio was also artist-in-residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany from 2004-2005. Johkio’s parallel engagement with literary and visual arts makes him poised to address the issues in his practice with a more cerebral quality. His use of ordinary newsprint elevates the idea of ubiquity as the being the more appropriate method of dissemination of ideas rather than the elitist canvas in a white cube. His works of ordinary people’s portraits depicted from the back are also painted in the same strain of elevation through ubiquity.
